Former Tech Mahindra CEO CP Gurnani Joins upGrad as Independent Director

upGrad, an Edtech company, has appointed CP Gurnani, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director of Tech Mahindra, as an independent Non-Executive Director to its board in January 2024.

Gurnani said that he will prioritise expanding the organisation’s reach globally using its useful credentials while being the Independent Director. He expressed his intentions to transform upGrad into a highly export-oriented product by collaborating with the leadership team and capitalising on the opportunities in B2B and B2C markets.

He further announced to build smart content and individualised learning paths for learners across diverse backgrounds and geographies. Gurnani looks to set valuable goals for the organisation that aligns with its strategy to become a global smart content factory.

After working with Tech Mahindra for 19 years as a leader, Gurnani retired from his post last month. He worked with the Board of Mahindra and Mahindra for more than three decades. Gurnani was the Founder and CEO at HCL Perot JV, before working with Tech Mahindra.

At upGrad, Gurnani was the second Non-Executive Director after Chegg’s Dan Rosensweig, who was appointed in March last year. Ronnie Screwvala, the Co-founder and Chairperson upGrad has said that the company has set business plans for the coming years and would embark on a journey of driving sustainability. As the demand for constant learning is increasing, the company looks to utilise a well-structured governance model aligned to support upGrad’s development over short-term gains”.

Ronnie sounds confident that CP Gurnani's wise leadership and ability to pre-empt market trends would help upGrad enhance its framework and promote the integrity and efficiency of the business model.

upGrad started its development program after the recent appointment of Asheesh Sharma as President of Short Courses and Bootcamps, effective immediately. He took over from Subramanyam Reddy, Co-founder of Knowledgehut, who resigned from his role on December 5, 2023.

upGrad made strategic leadership appointments in 2023, including Avnish Datt as Chief Business Officer at upGrad Harappa, Ipshita Kajla as HR Head for upGrad Abroad, along with Rajiv H Singh as Vice President and Raj Dogra as Chief Information Officer for new initiatives.

The edtech firm recorded a revenue of INR 1,194 crore in FY23, up 96% from the previous financial year’s INR 608 crore, while the adjusted EBITDA faced a loss of INR 558 crore, as opposed to Rs 572 crore in the prior year.

upGrad was founded by Screwvala, Mayank Kumar, and Phalgun Kompalli, working with various educational sectors, incorporating test preparation, study abroad programmes, undergraduate degrees, and courses in collaboration with over 300 university partners.
